Hostel listings can look similar on the surface — a few photos, a low price, some star ratings. But the difference between a great stay and a frustrating one usually comes down to details most people skip over while booking. Here's what to actually check.

1. Dorm Size and Bed Type

A "6-bed dorm" and a "16-bed dorm" are completely different experiences. Smaller dorms mean more privacy and quieter nights; larger ones are cheaper but noisier. Also check if beds are pod-style (with curtains and personal plug points) or open bunks — pods cost a bit more but are worth it for light sleepers.

2. Attached vs Shared Bathrooms

Some hostels list "private bathroom" per dorm, others have shared bathrooms down the hall. If cleanliness matters to you, read recent reviews specifically about bathroom hygiene — this is the most common complaint in budget stays.

3. Lockers and Security

Check whether lockers are included or cost extra, and whether they're big enough for a full backpack (not just a small bag). Also look for basic security signs — CCTV in common areas, key-card access, a 24-hour reception.

4. Location vs Price Trade-off

A hostel that's dirt cheap but 40 minutes from anywhere worth seeing isn't actually saving you money once you add up cab or auto fares. Check the map, not just the price.

5. Kitchen and Common Areas

If you're travelling on a budget, a usable kitchen can save serious money on food. Look for reviews mentioning whether the kitchen is actually functional (working stove, basic utensils) versus just listed as an amenity.

6. Recent Reviews, Not Just Overall Rating

A 4.5 rating built on reviews from three years ago means nothing. Sort reviews by "most recent" and read the last 10–15 — ownership changes, renovations, or a decline in staff can shift a hostel's quality fast.

7. Cancellation Policy

Budget stays often have stricter cancellation policies than hotels. Confirm the exact cutoff time and whether you get a full or partial refund before locking in dates.
